Instead of a proper plan with funding to train up new GPs and retain the ones we have, the Government and NHS England are attempting to replace GPs as much as possible with lesser skilled \u2018health care professionals\u2019 such as \u2018Physician Associates\u2019, with only two years of medical training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you will read later health chiefs in NW London have come up with a dreadful new scheme called \u2018Same Day Access Hubs\u2019, mostly staffed by non-doctors, which are supposed to <\/span><b>replace same day appointments with our GP\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for most urgent care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>On 9<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> March<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ealing Save Our NHS will be joining campaigners across the country calling for our NHS to be restored and of course that includes proper funding for our GP services.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" src=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/PHOTO-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3088\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/PHOTO-1.png 640w, https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/PHOTO-1-300x169.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>NEW HUBS WILL THREATEN GP &#8211; PATIENT RELATIONSHIP\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors, patient groups and campaigners are all up in arms over NW London health bosses\u2019 plans to <\/span><b>remove same day emergency care from our GP practices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Instead of seeing your GP, patients will be diverted to a \u2018Same Day Access Hub\u2019 mostly staffed by non \u2013 doctors. These plans are being <\/span><b>introduced without consultation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with local GPs, let alone the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So how will it work?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are feeling very unwell and ring your GP practice for a same day appointment an automated telephone system invites you to press option 1 and you will be transferred to the \u2018Same Day Hub\u2019. At the other end of the phone will be a \u2018Care Co-ordinator\u2019 (non &#8211; clinical),<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who is part of a team which includes \u2018<strong>clinicians<\/strong>\u2019 such as\u00a0 Physician Associates (<strong>just two years training<\/strong>) and Advanced Nursing Practitioners, and probably <\/span><b>only one supervising doctor <\/b>(also called a &#8216;clinician&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Care Co-ordinator will decide who you should speak to, supposedly with supervision from the GP, but also relying on computerised programmes, <\/span><b>a bit like NHS 111 or a Call Centre.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are invited in for an appointment you may have to travel to an unfamiliar location to be seen by staff you don\u2019t know and who don\u2019t know your history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Yo<\/b><b>u are only likely to have the option to speak to your GP if you have a \u201ccomplex long-term condition\u201d.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only an estimated 7% of appointments will be with the supervising GP, all of the rest will be with other health care professionals \/ clinicians. <\/span><b>Clearly safe supervision in such a situation will be very difficult for the doctor!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The new Hubs were due to be implemented on 1<\/b><b>st<\/b><b> April <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but the widespread opposition has forced the ICB to say it will only roll it out from that date \u2013 <\/span><b>we want it dropped completely.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Management Consultants apparently know better than Doctors!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NW London ICB would rather talk to management consultants than doctors it seems. Management consultants KPMG and Price Waterhouse Cooper were paid by the ICB to develop a primary care strategy and a \u2018more sustainable model of care\u2019 and now KPMG are to be paid to train GPs in setting up hubs \u2013 <\/span><b>nice<\/b> <b>work if you can get it.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Shame they didn\u2019t work out a plan with GPs instead!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>GPs are united in opposing these plans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BMA and the National Local Medical Committees, which represents GPs across England, have passed motions opposing the move to Hubs. NW London GP members of the Londonwide LMC have raised serious concerns with NW London ICB (the health bosses) and urged them to delay implementation until proper evaluation has taken place on the limited \u2018pilots\u2019. They have also urged the ICB not to impose the plans on GPs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LMC believe that <\/span><b>patient safety could be at risk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if triage is carried out by people without the degree of medical competence needed, as provided by a GP; and where possible with the prior knowledge built up as part of the GP patient relationship. It\u2019s not the model that is broken, it\u2019s <\/span><b>Governments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have failed the NHS through underfunding and privatisation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b>WE NEED TO FIGHT TO RESTORE THE NHS!T<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>PLEASE COME AND JOIN US OUTSIDE EALING TOWN HALL &#8211; <\/b>Starting off at 11.30am outside Ealing Town Hall and the moving on to different locations around the shopping area.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/PHOTO-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/PHOTO-3.jpg 480w, https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/PHOTO-3-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>SOME GOOD NEWS FOR EALING HOSPITAL:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January we met with London North West NHS Trust Chief Executive, Pippa Nightingale and Mark Titcomb, the Managing Director, for Ealing &amp; Central Middlesex Hospitals for an update on services at Ealing Hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some highlights from the meeting:-\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work is well underway on the new Ealing Community Diagnostic Centre, which is due to open in June. Whilst only a few Ultrasound Suites are in operation,\u00a0 once fully open there will be a a wide range of diagnostics including CT, MRI and Ultrasound scans. <\/span><b>GPs will be able to make a direct referrals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, speeding up detection of serious illnesses such as cancer and improving earlier diagnosis for our more deprived residents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter has of course added to the pressure on staff, but the two extra wards that have been opened have helped. Sadly long waits on trolleys are pretty much a permanent fixture in A&amp;E, as they are in most hospitals.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recently opened Mental Health Crisis Assessment Centre by West London NHS Trust on the St Bernard&#8217;s Site, has helped to reduce the still unacceptably long waits for those patients needing a Mental Health assessment. Frighteningly,\u00a0 Mental Health beds numbers are <\/span><b>still being cut<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in North West London.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the pipeline there are also plans to extend the our very busy overcrowded A&amp;E space <\/span><b>A good job we helped to save PEOPLE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 24-hour alarm service provided in-house to elderly and vulnerable residents across the Borough looks set to be closed by Ealing Council with 15 people losing their jobs<\/span><b>.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We were recently alerted to this service cut by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unison, the staff&#8217;s union, who say <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018the decision to cease offering an in-house careline service is a disaster waiting to happen.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Careline is an emergency alarm system for older people and younger people with a chronic sickness or disability and their carers living in the Borough that helps people to live as independently as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst there will be \u2018some\u2019 outsourcing to other agencies it is very unlikely they will be able to handle the\u00a0124,000 alarm calls and incidents over the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its all being rushed through with virtually no consultation with service users and is likely to impact on the NHS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good story in Ealing News with <\/span><b>a quote from center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>SHOCKING STATE OF DENTISTRY \u2013 PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every week there are more stories on the shocking state of Dentistry, but none so vivid as the pictures of people in Bristol queuing all night to register for a new dental practice! \u00a0 The Government has recently announced a \u2018Recovery Plan\u2019 \u2013 so does it live up to its name?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British Dental Association says the Government\u2019s so-called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery Plan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is incapable of even beginning to honour Rishi Sunak\u2019s promise to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restore<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> NHS dentistry or in any way to meet the Government\u2019s stated ambition to provide access to NHS dentistry for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018all who need it\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Plan sets up a \u2018new patient premium\u2019, which will give a bonus to dentists who see a patient that hasn\u2019t undergone treatment in two years &#8211; \u00a315 to first see them, \u00a350 if they need significant work done. It also raises the minimum Unit of Dental Activity (UDA) value from the current level of \u00a325.33 to \u00a328. The BDA says this is simply nowhere near enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u00a3200 million pledged is not really \u2018new\u2019 money and is less than half the underspend expected in this years budget. <\/span><b>It will do little to stem the flood of dentists stopping NHS work.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BDA have launched a Petition to save NHS dentistry with 38 Degrees and the Mirror.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/38d.gs\/SaveNHSDentistry\">You can sign it here<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GPs are very much in the spotlight at present and sadly not in a good way.
