{"id":3175,"date":"2024-10-10T18:39:13","date_gmt":"2024-10-10T18:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/?p=3175"},"modified":"2024-10-10T18:39:14","modified_gmt":"2024-10-10T18:39:14","slug":"gp-crisis-why-patients-should-support-gps-in-their-collective-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/?p=3175","title":{"rendered":"GP Crisis &#8211; Why Patients should support GPs in their Collective Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crisis in the NHS is now very much in the news following the publishing of <\/span><b>Lord Darzi\u2019s review<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the NHS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July national figures for bed occupancy were on average at 92%, worse in North West London, at 93.2% and in our local Trust at 94.6%.\u00a0 The safe level is 85%.\u00a0 The primary reason for these high figures, as we know, is the unforgivable <\/span><b>lack of adequate community and social care <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to support discharge, which has a knock on effect on A&amp;E waits etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pressure on our GPs has reached crisis point after years of underfunding so they are taking &#8216;collective action&#8217; to try and protect their patients and the viability of their practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only the kind of investment which took place over the previous Labour Government can begin to address the problems. Yet more re-organisations and use of the parasitic private sector will make things worse \u2013 but that\u2019s exactly what lobbyists are aiming for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The signs are not good, but thankfully the new Government has at least quickly settled the Junior Doctors dispute.\u00a0 Let\u2019s hope they will also give some justice to other staff especially our hard working GPs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-11e86593 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PHOTO-3-1.jpg ,https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PHOTO-3-1.jpg 780w, https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PHOTO-3-1.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/PHOTO-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-3163\" width=\"676\" height=\"384\" title=\"xr:d:DAFJYkDRP50:273,j:37094646602,t:22100418\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>GPs ARE TAKING \u2018COLLECTIVE ACTION\u2019 AND WE SHOULD SUPPORT THEM<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years of underfunding and diminishing GP numbers has taken its toll on GP practices. Patient satisfaction has plummeted and GPs believe that the quality of care they provide has declined.\u00a0 General Practice is the foundation of the NHS and it&#8217;s now at a crisis point. <\/span><b>Our GPs are saying enough is enough and taking \u2018collective action\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;\u00a0 it\u2019s technically not industrial action as they are not employed by the NHS, like nurses or hospital doctors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So how did things get so bad?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are now 1,700 fewer full-time equivalent GPs in England then in 2016, while patient numbers have risen by over 6 million.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GPs workload has become more complex and keeps increasing as extra work is passed down from other parts of the NHS.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An additional pot of funding for GP practices staff <strong>did not allow surgeries to employ extra GPs<\/strong>, leaving thousands of locum and newly qualified GPs without jobs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below inflation funding rises have cut GP budgets in real terms and the 6% rise offered by the new Government still leaves funding below its value in 2018-19. <\/span><b>The core funding for each patient per year is now just \u00a3107.57 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>just 30p a day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Practice gets just 8.4% of NHS funding for handling up to 90% of direct patient contact with the NHS \u2013 pretty astonishing \u2013 it is no wonder that GPs have had enough!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What action are\u00a0 GPs taking:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the banner of \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protect your Patients, Protect your GP Practice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 the doctors union, the BMA, has listed 10 actions that GPs may<\/span><b> choose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no longer doing unfunded work to plug local service gaps; not using time-consuming online or other referral forms; not allowing themselves to be used to ration care or medicines or participating in pilot schemes aimed at changing General Practice without proper agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some GPs are also limiting patient consultations to the recommended safe limit of 25 per day, instead of the current 40\u201350 per day, but aiming to see almost everyone face-to-face. It\u2019s great to hear about peoples experiences of the NHS and GPs and some of the problems &#8211; as well as hearing about fantastic treatment, some of it life saving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a new leaflet, which you can read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/ESON-Stall-Leaflet-Sept-24.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our next Stall is on <\/span><b>Saturday 12<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> October from 11.30 \u2013 1.00pm in Ealing Broadway<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> outside Marks &amp; Spencers \u2013 please come and join us if you can.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"682\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PHOTO-1-Save-Our-NHS-14.1.21.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PHOTO-1-Save-Our-NHS-14.1.21.jpg 682w, https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PHOTO-1-Save-Our-NHS-14.1.21-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ealingsaveournhs.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PHOTO-1-Save-Our-NHS-14.1.21-678x381.jpg 678w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>DARZI REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS MANY OF THE PROBLEMS FACING THE NHS:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month Lord Darzi published his independent investigation of the NHS, commissioned by Wes Streeting, Health &amp; Social Care Secretary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darzi identifies the NHS re-organisation as part of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 \u2013 \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a calamity without international precedent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 and the years of austerity, as the cause of the current state of the NHS <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">and<\/span> its lack of capacity to deliver surgeries and tests, resulting in over 7 million people currently being on NHS waiting lists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However what he<\/span><b> fails<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to identify is the other key impact of the 2012 Act , which has had a disastrous impact on the NHS , namely <\/span><b>privatisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So what does Darzi say is the solution?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darzi points to the decade of restorative funding in the 2000s as evidence of a well-run health service, when patient satisfaction was high, for both GPs and the NHS . The targets for A&amp;E and hospital treatment were well met by 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the <\/span><b>remit given to him by Streeting prevented him from making funding recommendations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he is absolutely clear in his findings on the damage of underfunding since 2010:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018The 2010s were the most austere decade since the NHS was founded, with spending growing at around 1 per cent in real terms.\u00a0 (Since then) the NHS has been starved of capital and the capital budget was repeatedly raided to plug holes in day-to-day spending.\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>How has the Government responded:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Secretary of State Wes Streeting, announced the Darzi Review was being held, he said that it would aim at \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diagnosing the problem\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so the Government could \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">write the prescription\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly\u2019 so far the \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescription<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 doesn\u2019t sound very promising, with no new money in the short term to alleviate any of the problems as we head in to Winter, an over-reliance on the private sector to treat more patients and bring down waiting lists, and yet even more reforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As &#8216;Keep our NHS Public&#8217; say in their response to Darzi <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013\u2018 Will the Government rise to the challenge, or mistakenly conclude that the wrong treatments \u2013 \u2018reform\u2019 and further austerity \u2013 are just what the doctor ordered? \u00a0\u2026this would be a rebuff to Lord Darzi and \u2013 more importantly \u2013 a huge tragedy for patients, staff and the NHS.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More on the Darzi Report from Keep Our NHS Public <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/keepournhspublic.com\/darzi-report-will-government-write-wrong-prescription\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Lord Darzi review missed, from anti privatisation campaign &#8216;We Own It&#8217; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weownit.org.uk\/blog\/nhs-privatisation-and-pfi-what-lord-darzi-review-missed\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>JOIN US TO DISCUSS THE DARZI REPORT ON TUESDAY 15TH OCTOBER:\u00a0<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>You are very welcome to join our discussion on Darzi at our next online Meeting. The plans caused outrage among GPs, campaigners and other residents and the plans were temporarily put on hold.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 14,000 residents signed the petition strongly opposing the move away from GPs crucial role in diagnosis and making decisions on treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst the NW London NHS bosses (ICB) have not formally withdrawn the idea of Hubs, they have admitted that improving access is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018multi-faceted\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one size does not fit all\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are now embarking on an engagement exercise, to be led by Primary Care Networks, which are local groups of GP practices. Hospitals are crumbling, waiting lists are millions strong, and more services are being outsourced with NHS staff overworked and underpaid\u2019.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight:
